How we rate a whisk(e)y...

When evaluating a dram, we try to pay special attention to the way it awakens all five of our senses. We rate each whisk(e)y on a scale weighted for each of these senses, with a total of 100 points available for the maximum score.

1.  For our sense of sight- we discuss the color of the whisk(e)y, the apparent viscosity or the “legs” of the whisk(e)y. We evaluate the label as well, knowing full well how easily consumers can have their expectations swayed by a good design. But digging a little deeper- we might even delve into the optics of the brand in certain situations… (10 points maximum)

2.  Our sense of touch evaluates the viscosity of the whisk(e)y on the touch and one the tongue. But more so, how does the flavor/nose match with the thickness of thinness of the dram? (10 point maximum)

3.  Our ears tell us more about a whisk(e)y than we give ourselves credit for. We base our “ears” rating on word-of-mouth, recommendations, social media buzz, engagements in the bar/restaurant world, and more. (20 point maximum)

4.   When it comes to enjoying spirits, there’s no organ that can tell you more than the nose- with many researchers claiming that as much as 80% of what we perceive as taste is actually coming from our olfactory senses. Our sense of smell can transport us back in time, awakening memory. Does this whisk(e)y take us anywhere? Is the aroma indicative of the taste?  (30 points maximum)

5.  And finally, the main event… Taste. Has everything our senses told us rung true? Have they all bonded together, bringing depth and complexity? Is this a good representation of the style? Is this a good representation of the distillery or the brand? (30 points maximum)

With all of our senses playing their roles, we can factor our overall rating that allows each whisk(e)y to stand on its own merits.
